Hiking: Safety FIrst!


Follow these 11 hiking tips to safely enjoy your hike adventures!

  1. Water-always bring MORE water than you think you might need-we encourage reusable fillable water bottles

  2. Snacks-hiking burns up calories and you will most likely need a healthy snack along the way-we recommend trail mix, granola or protein bar, nuts or fruit

3. Hiking stick- if you need for balance or strength on hills and uneven terrain

*Find the perfect stick simply laying outside on a trail or you can buy trekking poles for extra support in strenuous, muddy, rocky, or icy conditions!

4. Socks- Wear comfortable thick socks to help prevent blisters and sore toes

5. Hiking footwear- Be sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes/boots with tread so you can get up and down uneven terrain more easily

6. Trail map-map out your route before you go so you know how long it will take and what provisions you might need. We recommend having the trail map in hand as you hike. (it can be a paper copy or take picture on your phone, but be sure to actually take a picture because your cellphone may lose service in the woods!)

7. Cellphone- Bring a cell phone in case of emergency and let someone know your hiking plan before you set out just in case!

8. Knowledge-Be aware of plants and animals that you may encounter during your hike that may require extra precautions. Stinging insects, ticks, spiders, snakes and poison ivy are a few to be aware of.

9. Safety Kit- Bring along a hiking bag/backpack with a safety kit equipped with bandages & any special medications needed for anyone hiking with you

(ex. inhalers or epipens!)

10. Sunscreen & bug repellent- pack sunscreen and bug repellent if necessary to protect your skin

11. Weather-be sure to check the weather for the location you are hiking, so you don’t get surprised by unexpected weather & you can pack the proper clothing/gear
