Apple Math- Data
Apples are a tasty tool to help learn about sorting, graphing, counting, and fractions!
Sorting:
How many different ways can children find to sort apples?
Ask the kids to sort apples in as many ways as they can (some examples are apple types, color, size, stem type, and taste is very fun!)
Children can simply sort into piles or you can give them sticks to help separate their sorting piles.
Seed Counting
Cut open apples and see how many seeds each apple contains:
Have children graph how many seeds are in each apple
Do experiments on seed quantity: a.) Do bigger apples have more seeds? b.) Do certain apple types have more seeds?
Seeds are perfect tools for teaching children counting, subitizing, and grouping. Children can use seeds to count by 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, etc. Seeds can also be used to recognize quantity in a small group without the need to count.
Apple Fractions
Apples are a delicious and healthy way to learn about fractions. Start with 1 whole apple and use child-safe knives so each child can cut their own apple into fractions. It’s fun to ask a child to eat a certain fraction of the apple!
